The National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA), founded in 1969, is a Science and Technological Innovation institution which belongs to the Ministry of Higher Education in Cuba.

It is a center of excellence in the development of R+D+i systems, from the training of a highly qualified staff, both nationally and internationally. It has achieved scientific-technical results of great impact on the prevention, diagnosis, and control of pests and diseases, food safety, and on the preparation and adaptation to climate change as well.

Dentro de las funciones asignadas al CENSA, como centro que integra el grupo técnico que trabaja en las investigaciones científicas para el enfrentamiento a la COVID 19, está el desarrollo y aplicación de un modelo in vitro basado en cultivos celulares. Este modelo permite evaluar la actividad antiviral de los productos naturales y sintéticos en desarrollo. El mismo se basa en el empleo de una cepa de coronavirus bovino citopatogénica que pertenece a la misma familia que el virus pandémico SARS-CoV-2. Este virus tiene la ventaja adicional que puede cultivarse en el laboratorio con Nivel 2 de Bioseguridad y no causa ningún efecto nocivo en las personas. Read more

La Covid – 19 en el 80 por ciento de los casos transita como un catarro común que incluye síntomas como tos seca, disnea, mialgia y fatiga y en los  casos graves se caracteriza por producir sepsis y shock séptico, neumonía y síndrome de distress respiratorio agudo, complicación  más frecuente en pacientes con esta enfermedad.
