The National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA), founded in 1969, is a Science and Technological Innovation institution which belongs to the Ministry of Higher Education in Cuba.

It is a center of excellence in the development of R+D+i systems, from the training of a highly qualified staff, both nationally and internationally. It has achieved scientific-technical results of great impact on the prevention, diagnosis, and control of pests and diseases, food safety, and on the preparation and adaptation to climate change as well.

El Modelo del Coronavirus Bovino

La COVID-19 propicia la colaboración científica entre varias instituciones del país. El CENSA, desde inicio del mes de febrero, es convocado a participar en la Comisión de Innovación, que crea el MINSAP, para identificar, desarrollar y/o implementar resultados de la ciencia como parte del plan de enfrentamiento a la pandemia antes de su llegada al país. Son varios los aportes y equipos de trabajo en los que se incluye este colectivo.

Uno de los resultados está vinculado a la evaluación de productos con actividad antiviral.

La experiencia acumulada por el CENSA en el diagnóstico de enfermedades en animales producidas por Coronavirus, permitieron establecer un modelo in vitro, basado en cultivos celulares, para evaluar la actividad antiviral de productos naturales y sintéticos desarrollados por instituciones de BioCubaFarma, Hospitales y Universidades del país.

La Covid – 19 en el 80 por ciento de los casos transita como un catarro común que incluye síntomas como tos seca, disnea, mialgia y fatiga y en los  casos graves se caracteriza por producir sepsis y shock séptico, neumonía y síndrome de distress respiratorio agudo, complicación  más frecuente en pacientes con esta enfermedad.
